October 10, 2023 – Danvers, Mass. CCC, the leading provider of Open Access (OA) workflow solutions, announces new data import capabilities and AI-enabled affiliation matching in its OA Agreement Intelligence modeling and analytics tool that provides publishers with a 360-degree view of disambiguated publication data to build accurate, transparent institutional offers regarding OA.

OA Agreement Intelligence supports the import of publication data from subscriptions and non-RightsLink sources to further enhance the capability to analyze and compare various business scenarios. The solution combines sophisticated, AI-enabled, affiliation-matching technology and analytic capabilities, to reliably disambiguate institution affiliation and funder relationships. This empowers publishers to easily structure and negotiate OA agreements.

“With CCC’s expertise in OA workflow, agreement modeling, and affiliation disambiguation, we are uniquely positioned to help publishers scale their agreement program and optimize their results with partners through a seamless, data-driven agreement modeling tool,” said Emily Sheahan, Vice President & Managing Director, CCC. “These new capabilities enable publishers to import publication data – both open and subscription – and easily keep it up to date regardless of which APC or publication platforms they use.”

CCC is an active partner in the evolution of OA publishing models. For years, CCC has brought together key OA stakeholders from the author, publisher, institution, funding, and vendor communities through roundtables, panel events, webinars, and podcasts. CCC is a member of OASPA (Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association), ALPSP (Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers), STM (International Association of STM Publishers) and SSP (Society for Scholarly Publishing).

CCC will showcase its new agreement modeling capabilities at the Frankfurt Book Fair. In addition to highlighting OA Agreement Intelligence’s features, CCC will join other conversations about AI during the Frankfurt Book Fair at the following events:

  • AI Solutions: Trained with Your Content at the Frankfurt Studio – Public Events (Foyer, Hall 4.0) on 19 October 1:00pm – 2:00pm CEST. The Large Language Models (LLMs) that are fundamental to generative AI solutions, including ChatGPT from OpenAI, rely on machine-readable content available on the web. Whether that material is taken from books, scholarly journals, or other curated publications protected by copyright, permission and licensing may be necessary. Should AI be trained with your content with or without your consent? Court decisions, regulation, and legislation will ultimately create the legal guardrails for protecting copyrighted content from unchecked infringement. In the meantime, debate over any limits to be placed on training LLMs must address concerns over equity, transparency, and authenticity.

October 3, 2023 – Danvers, Mass. –  CCC, a pioneer in voluntary collective licensing and leading information solutions provider to organizations around the world, will host a Town Hall via LinkedIn Live on “AI, Licensing, and the Path Forward” on Thursday, 12 October, 10:00 EDT/15:00 BST/16:00 CEST.

CCC’s Vice President, General Counsel Catherine Zaller Rowland and a panel of legal experts including Prof. Daniel Gervais, Bruce Rich, and Carlo Scollo Lavizarri will discuss how voluntary collective licensing can enable the use of large collections of copyrighted materials, and why AI technology providers must address important concerns about copyright, equity, transparency, and authenticity.

“Copyrighted material is fuel for AI systems,” said Tracey Armstrong, President and CEO, CCC. “Voluntary collective licensing is an effective solution enabling the use of copyrighted material as society realizes the benefits promised by AI systems.”

Generative AI is set to add up to $4.4 trillion of value to the global economy annually, according to a report from McKinsey Global Institute published in June. The adoption of AI technology is rapidly growing across industries and the training of these systems requires access to vast amounts of data, including copyrighted content.

“CCC is collaborating with stakeholders, including rightsholders and users, to develop market-based licensing solutions while we advocate for responsible policies that respect copyright,” said Armstrong.

In addition to the Town Hall, CCC recently launched the dedicated AI resource page, Intersection of AI & Copyright, which includes Prof. Gervais’ paper, “Collective Licensing and AI” and Rich’s essay in CCC’s eBook Creating Solutions Together: Lessons to Inform the Future of Collective Licensing.

CCC frequently convenes expert panels to explore complex and important topics in the world of research, publishing, and media. In September, CCC co-hosted a forum on building AI strategies with FAIR Data in partnership with the GO FAIR Foundation in the Netherlands. Recent CCC Town Hall events included Information Integrity & ChatGPT, which explored the evolving nature of originality and authenticity in a world of AI and discussed the rapid growth of generative AI tools; and Making Research Data FAIR, which focused on the development of research data that is FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) through culture, training, and technology and which drives confidence in science on four continents.

September 12, 2023 – Danvers, Mass. –  CCC, a leader in advancing copyright, accelerating knowledge, and powering innovation, today announced Gold Open Access (OA) publisher Frontiers has adopted the industry-leading Ringgold Identify Database as its Persistent Identifier (PID) solution to help power its OA models by normalizing and disambiguating organization data.

With over 600,000 Ringgold PIDs and metadata records, the Ringgold Identify Database provides a curated view of organization data to help stakeholders improve data quality, drive strategic decision-making, and support data interoperability across the scholarly communications ecosystem. Used by intermediaries, funders, institutions, and a growing list of leading publishers, the Ringgold Identify Database is the only solution to offer structured organizational hierarchies and consortia connections to help stakeholders quickly understand complex relationships. The Ringgold Identify Database includes rich metadata and additional identifiers, including the ISNI ID, an open ISO standard to support wider interoperability.

“Before adopting the Ringgold Identify Database, our team spent far too much time going back and forth with the institution curation and validation to make sure we had accurate data,” said Andrei Jigman, Lead Product Manager, Frontiers. “We selected Ringgold above all other PID options because its comprehensive and curated data set is critical in reducing our administrative burden while improving service to our researchers.”

“Data quality is vitally important to innovative publishers like Frontiers,” said Emily Sheahan, Vice President & Managing Director, CCC. “Access to a professionally curated, granular dataset to identify organizational relationships—and therefore accurately identify funding entitlements—is a strategic priority for publishers committed to sustainable, equitable, and transparent OA publishing models.”

Since its acquisition of Ringgold, CCC has become a leading provider of PIDs for organizations that participate in the scholarly communications ecosystem. CCC relies on Ringgold identifiers to disambiguate author affiliations related to Article Processing Charges (APCs) managed through RightsLink for Scientific Communications (RLSC).

CCC is a long-time supporter of the creation, development, and proliferation of identifiers. The acquisition of Ringgold reflects CCC’s ongoing commitment to promoting data interoperability, addressing market friction, and collaborating with stakeholders like Frontiers to create solutions together.
